Childlike Heart

Matthew 18:1-3

The disciples were asking Jesus who would be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. An earthly kingdom has an hierarchy, so they naturally thought it would be the same in the heavenly kingdom. Jesus flipped their paradigm upside down. He took a little child, probably 3-4 years old, and sits him on His lap. Then He said to His disciples, “You’ve got to be like this kid or you won’t enter My kingdom.” (Paraphrase by Jason)  Wow. Craziness. Do what? I’m sure they were caught off-guard with this one. “You mean, I’ve got to be like a kid to even get in?” Yes, that’s right, you need a childlike heart.

Why a child? HUMILITY. How many prideful 3-4 year olds do you know? What are they chiefly concerned with at that age? Making sure they’re close to their parents, especially their mom. Once they know they’re safe with their parents they simply act like kids. A 3 year old doesn’t say, “Hey dad, I’ll spend time with you if you build my savings account.” He just wants to hang out with his dad for no other reason than the fact that he’s his dad.

Kids have no ambition. They easily and quickly forgive. They don’t hold grudges. They don’t take all things seriously. They’re not easily offended. They trust their parents for provision and protection. They don’t worry. They don’t doubt. They are content. They don’t take selfies (HA)!

If you want to enter heaven, you need to be just like a child. With God as your Father you can experience full contentment and joy as you stay close to HIM.
