America is Speeding Toward Disaster

When we were kids, our dad drove a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with a black metallic paint job and white leather seats. It was a pretty sweet car – and it went really fast.

Below the gearshift was the letter “S,” and every time Dad threw it into “S,” we took off like a rocket. Our heads would be pinned to the back of the seat as we’d grip our seat belts with white-knuckled fear.

After Mom scolded Dad a few times, he stopped. But we’ll never forget how it felt to accelerate at what seemed like breakneck speed.

In today’s America, it sure feels the same way spiritually and morally. It’s as if the Devil (not comparing to our dad, of course) has hopped into the driver’s seat, slapped it into “S,” and slammed on the gas. Our accelerated decline is pinning our heads to the seat each and every week – and it’s only getting faster. Here are some recent headlines over the last few weeks:

  • The first satanic church is about to open its doors soon in Texas. Check out what the website says: “The Greater Church of Lucifer is a foundation for the unique individual who dares to illuminate the inner-light of the Black Flame.”

That’s nice – let’s light the black flame of death and destruction. Uhhh, call us crazy, but is this supposed to be a good thing? We’re speeding in the wrong direction.

  • A high-school football coach – who also happens to be a Desert Storm and Desert Shield combat veteran – was banned in Washington state from praying at midfield after football games. The superintendent told him that he could not take action, such as “kneeling or bowing the head,” even during the students’ own personal religious expression. He was also told that his talks with the team “must remain entirely secular in nature.”

Even President Obama has bowed his head in prayer on multiple occasions as our president, yet a high-school football coach is forbidden?

  • In the middle of the night on Monday, Oct. 5, 2015, the Ten Commandments monument at the Oklahoma state capital was removed. When asked about the nighttime removal, the Office of Management and Enterprise Services said, “We wanted it to be done as quickly and efficiently as possible, and doing it at night gave us the best opportunity to do that.”

Removing the commandments as quickly as possible? Why – to make way for the Greater Church of Lucifer or something?

Check out what Daniel Webster, one of America’s greatest statesman and former secretary of state and senator, said concerning the Ten Commandments:

“If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; If we and our posterity shall be true to the Christian religion, if we and they shall live always in the fear of God and shall respect His Commandments … we may have the highest hopes of the future fortunes of our country… But if we and our posterity neglect religious instruction and authority; violate the rules of eternal justice, trifle with the injunctions of morality, and recklessly destroy the political constitution which holds us together, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.”

Mr. Secretary was right: We are “burying all our glory in profound obscurity.”

As Christians, we look to Scripture to guide us, and the prophet Isaiah’s prophetic warning to the nation of Israel sounds a clear warning for us to heed today as well. The question is, will we learn from history?

“For Jerusalem will stumble, and Judah will fall, because they speak out against the Lord and refuse to obey him. They provoke him to his face. The very look on their faces gives them away. They display their sin like the people of Sodom and don’t even try to hide it. They are doomed! They have brought destruction upon themselves.

Tell the godly that all will be well for them. They will enjoy the rich reward they have earned! But the wicked are doomed, for they will get exactly what they deserve.

Childish leaders oppress my people, and women rule over them. O my people, your leaders mislead you; they send you down the wrong road” (Isaiah 3:8-12 NLT).

Our leaders are driving us down the wrong road, and speeding toward disaster. But we can throw it into neutral and turn direction through repentance.

After this warning from Isaiah, God offered a solution: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it” (Isaiah 30:15).
