The Truth will MAKE you free

Some versions say the truth will “set” you free, but in the NASB (which is a word for word translation and not a thought for thought translation) it uses the word “make.” This is very important to understand.
Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will MAKE you free.” John 8:31-32
In every religion you have belief & behavior – your belief about God determines your behavior toward people. But with Christianity we have a very important distinguishing factor – we become. In between belief & behavior we become a new creation.
When we accept Christ into our lives we are “born again,” which means we are not the same people we used to be – we gain a brand new identity. We become children of God when we believe in His Son Jesus Christ, and on this foundation of becoming a new creation we behave.
Truth is a PERSON, so when Jesus says the “truth” will MAKE you free what He’s saying is by faith in Him you become a free person – you are no longer under the curse of sin. Of course, the sin nature still exists, but you now have become a new creation – “the old things are past, behold all things become new.” (2 Cor 5:17)
As a child of God you don’t have to try to be free or think about being set free, you have BECOME free. So the question is, has the truth set you free?
