Sin’s Blueprint

Blueprint

“And he said to the woman, ‘Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?'”  Genesis 3:1b

It’s easier to identify the results of sin in our lives than it is to locate the roots of sin.  We call the roots “sin’s blueprint” because there is a clear plan that Satan uses to cause us to sin, yet so often we fail to recognize it.  This, of course, results in continued sin and separation from God.  Been there done that!

As we read through Genesis at the beginning of every year we noticed this year a broken pattern that we’ve not seen before.  It took place in Genesis 2 and 3 when the serpent entered the picture.  This tipped us off to Satan’s primary plan – his blueprint – and it’s pretty simple:  he doesn’t want us to confess God as LORD.

Throughout Genesis 2 and 3 God is referred to as the “LORD God.”  The root word for God is Elohim, which means “mighty one, ruler, judge – God of power.”  And the root word for LORD is Yehovah (Jehovah), which means “the unchanging, eternal, all existing one, the God of power and completion – the One True God.”

Jehovah is God’s proper name, and it was held by the Jews in such high regard that it was never pronounced except by the High Priest on the Day of Atonement.  Yet in Genesis 3:1 the serpent doesn’t call Him by His full name.  He simply said, “…has God said…”  The problem is that Eve worked off of Satan’s blueprint and didn’t use God’s full name either in 3:3 when she replied, “…God has said…”  As soon as she took her eyes off Jehovah (the One True God) and looked at the tree it was all over – God was no longer LORD to her – He was just God.

The story continues as Eve fell and her husband along with her – just as Satan designed it.  Interestingly, in verse 8 the phrase “LORD God” enters back into the picture.  The rest is history and there’s so much more to discuss, but the point is that sin’s blueprint began in the garden by denying God as LORD – the One True God.

Throughout history sin’s blueprint has been followed to a tee.  If Satan can’t get an outright denial of God altogether he’ll be happy to just make Him another god – one of power, but not The One True God.  We see this as the “idea” of God in culture is tolerated, but the truth that there is only One True God – whose name is Jehovah – is not.  Satan does not tolerate the exclusive statement that the God who created the heavens and the earth is the One True God, who sent His son Jesus to the earth – and that every knee must bow to Him.

We must purpose to live off God’s blueprint – remembering to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves always confessing God is the LORD and HIS ways are best – #whateverthecost!
